Potential drivers should be aware that specific circumstances such as your personal driving record or a medical condition may prevent you from securing employment in the transportation industry even if you meet all requirements.
In extreme cases, you may be denied insurance or your employer will have to pay substantial surcharges to employ you.
Before incurring the expense of medical, written and road tests as well as possible training, you should take the following self check.
Self check
- Do you have more than three moving traffic violations/at-fault collisions combined in the three years preceding the date of hire?
- Do you have a Criminal Code conviction in the three years preceding the date of hire?
If you answered "yes" to one or both of the questions above, SGI recommends that you check with your potential employer and/or insurance broker about how your record will affect your ability to gain employment.
- Has your medical report been completed and approved by SGI?
- Are you at least 18 years old and not a Novice driver in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program?
If you answered "no" to questions three and four, you will be unable to start testing for a higher class of licence.
Note: If you have a Criminal Code conviction or certain medical condition(s), you may not be able to operate a commercial vehicle in the United States, making it that much more difficult to secure employment.
